A Strange Proposition from a Megabrand!
Early in October, news broke that a megabrand hair products manufacturer was close to developing a pill that would prevent grey hair and the world took notice, as evidenced by all the news coverage.
The prospect of taking a single pill to eliminate those pesky silver strands from EVER appearing in one’s lifetime is quite the proposition, who among us wouldn’t love to banish those greys from ever appearing?
But, hiding in the specifics of the proposition are potential stumbling blocks.
Based on news reports, the megabrand‘s miracle pill is based on the TRP-2 enzyme, which promotes the production of melanocyte stem cells within the hair follicles. As previously explored in our earlier articles discussing what causes grey hair, you learn that melanocyte stem cells produce the pigment melanin, which gives hair and skin their unique color. When melanocytes die – whether as a direct result of the aging process or due to cell malfunction – the hair loses its color and goes white.
Theoretically, the megabrand proposes to use the TRP-2 enzyme to promote the production of melanocyte stem cells, resulting in perpetually pigmented hair follicles that never lose their color.
Unfortunately, there are some issues with this approach as outlined below.
- First, according to the company this grey hair pill (which is projected to be released in 2015) needs to be taken at least 10 YEARS before the first signs of greying. I can’t say I know anyone who has worried about getting grey hair 10 seconds before seeing their first one, more so 10 years before. Now what happens after dutifully taking this pill for 10 years only to find out that it does not work, what evidence can a user provide to show that they were following the instructions exactly and never missed a single dose? More importantly, does that consumer get his/her money back for the 10 years’ worth of pills?
- The other issue is the choice of enzyme. By targeting TRP-2, which is involved in very low level bodily functions beyond its superficial role in coloring hair, there exist the potential for negative unintended consequences affecting one’s health. Some physicians have expressed concerns that utilizing TRP-2 in this manner could interfere with the effective diagnosis of melanoma and other skin diseases that are identified by their contribution to skin discoloration. For a bit of an analogy, using TRP-2 to prevent grey hair is akin to wanting to change the formatting of a MS WORD document, but instead of making the changes directly to the document , we instead start fooling around with the computer’s entire operating system. This seems a bit foolhardy.
The beauty of employing an enzyme like Catalase is that its role in the human body is that of eliminating waste by-product hydrogen peroxide. This means its only impact is on hydrogen peroxide and no unintended consequences can result. It’s the equivalent of going directly to the MS WORD document and changing the font color, while leaving everything else undisturbed.
The bottom line is this: preventing grey hair shouldn’t put your health at risk, nor should it require ten years of dedication. A grey hair solution should be simple, fast and effective – Just like Grey Defence® the standard of what a good grey hair pill should be
