Does plucking your grey causes two or more to take its place? Does drinking carrot juice reverses grey? This article tries to separates fact from fiction.
Grey Hair Myths Busted
If you’re starting to get grey hair, then it’s likely that you’ve identified the culprit as stress. Whether it’s pressure to perform in an increasingly competitive corporate world or the anxiety that comes with being exposed to numerous headlines about the sorry state of the economy, it’s no wonder more people associate having grey hair with a stressful lifestyle.
While many “experts” have suggested that there’s no real connection between stress and greying, recent research has proven then to be wrong and that your first instinct is right – stress does cause premature greying. In fact, numerous studies and surveys have discovered a powerful link between stress and greying. When we experience rising levels of stress, our bodies produce more hydrogen peroxide, which is then accumulated in our hair follicles. As a result of this increase in hydrogen peroxide levels, the enzymes that are primarily responsible for repairing hair follicles (MSRA and MSRB) are deactivated, leading to melanocyte death. This then allows the hydrogen peroxide to effectively bleach the hair follicles, resulting in a stressed-out silver mane.
In other words, start taking up that yoga habit – because stress does cause grey hair! When it comes to popular myths surrounding greying, this one is confirmed!
Let’s take a more detailed looked at other gray hair myths that are out there and lets see which is Fact and which is Fiction
The Myth: Like the mythological Hydra, pulling out one grey hair will only result in two taking its place.
The Truth: This popular myth is totally and unequivocally false. While our eyes may have us convinced that multiple greys have taken the place of the original offender, plucking a single hair follicle will result in the growth of another single hair follicle – no matter what its color. This myth was likely fueled by the a rapid greying process, because of an over build-up of hydrogen peroxide, leading some to believe that a plucked grey would come back with a vengeance.
The Myth: Smoking causes grey hair.
The Truth: This is one case were that old wives tale was actually true, as smoking does indeed cause grey hair. A 1997 study carried out by researchers in England discovered that smokers were up to four times more likely to have grey hair than their non-smoking counterparts. If you want to preserve your luscious hair color – and improve your health – then it’s time to ditch the smoking habit.
The Myth: You can reverse the greying hair process.
The Truth: While there are a few methods for reversing greying, there are plenty of quack cure-alls that do nothing but raise false hope. In fact, in a forum dedicated to dealing with grey hair, one forum user even told another user to “drink more carrot juice” to get rid of grey hair. For a quick grey hair fix, buy yourself a box of semi-permanent or permanent hair dye. Speaking of which…
The Myth: You can only use permanent hair dye to cover up those stubborn grey hairs.
The Truth: Those of you that are put off by the idea of a permanent hair dye can relax – semi-permanent hair dye covers those grey hairs just as well. It’s likely that this rumor started a few decades ago before semi-permanent hair dye had developed into the better coverage formulas available today.
The Myth: Hair can turn grey after a frightening event or trauma.
The Truth: Hollywood has long ascribed to the myth that you can get grey hair due to a frightening event (just look at Frankenstein’s bride). But there’s absolutely no empirical proof that grey hair occurs suddenly due to severe shock or trauma. Sorry Hollywood.
These are by no means the limit to the number of grey hair myths that are circulating out in the world today – but they are the biggest offenders. While we still may not exactly understand what it is in our genes that makes some of us get grey hair earlier than others, we do know that popular grey hair myths are preventing us from seeing the bigger picture. If you are reading this article because you are suffering from premature greying, remember we can help reverse grey hair.
