Catalase and Glutathione Peroxidase are two antioxidant enzymes the body uses to break down hydrogen peroxide and prevent greying. This article explains how enzymes work.

An Brief Explanation About Enzymes: No Ph.D. Required!

Enzymes are the unsung heroes in the body’s everyday chemical processes. Enzymes essential speed up chemical reactions – causing reactions to occur millions of times faster than they normally would and are essential for life. Enzyme therapy uses enzymes to improve health in a directed way and has been around for many decades now. However, the treatment of gray hair using enzymes is a recent practice, which came about because of new scientific discoveries made in Europe.

Let’s take a deeper look (not too deep mind you) into what enzymes are and what they do. Of course this is a blog about gray hair so our discussion of enzymes will keep that point central.

If you are hoping that this is not another scientific article that lists a bunch of mumbo-jumbo on enzymes, you’re in luck: you won’t need a Ph.D. in Biochemistry to read this article. In fact, once you’re done reading it, we recommend that you go out and impress your friends with your extensive new knowledge on enzymes and enzyme therapy – you can do that by TWEETING or LIKING the article at the bottom.

So what exactly are enzymes – and how do they work? The scientific definition of an enzyme is a protein that helps speed up chemical processes within the body. Think of your body as a chemistry lab – at any given moment, there’s a number of chemical reactions occurring to help your body properly function. Enzymes hold the key to causing these chemical reactions to occur, as they are the catalyst that speeds up the reactions.

Now that you know that enzymes provide the stimulus for chemical reactions, let’s take a look at how that happens. Enzymes come in two flavors, one that joins (like a matchmaker) and one that breakup like the “breakup artist”.

Enzymes can be matchmakers or home breakers. Let’s pretend that the enzyme in question is a matchmaker that wants to fix up two friends (the substrates). The matchmaker enzymes knows that in order for the two to meet up and connect, it has to provide them with a place to meet. That place is known as the “active site”, and it can be found directly on the enzyme. When the enzyme approaches the specific substrates, it binds them to its active site so they can start bonding.

In matchmaking terms, it’s like getting two people to meet up at a restaurant so they can start connecting. Once the substrates have arrived at the enzyme’s active site (or restaurant), the enzyme provides these molecules with the push they need to start bonding. This push encourages a bond to form, which permanently links the substrates so that they form an entirely new compound (the product). Finally, the enzyme releases the new product, thus allowing it to seek out new substrates.

In a previous article discussing free radicals and gray Hair we talk about the enzyme Superoxide Dismutase (SOD). SOD is a matchmaker enzyme where free radicals are the substrate. SODs combine free radicals with hydrogen to produce hydrogen peroxide. For all those following along at home you know that too much hydrogen peroxide will cause gray hair. That’s why a stressful life is bad because it creates more free radicals that must be neutralized.

In short, the enzyme matchmaker saw two substrates that were perfect for each other, introduced them at its “restaurant”, gave them a little push to start bonding, and released them back out into the world as a newly formed couple.

Now not every relationship formed will be beneficial for the long haul, by design our body creates many marriages of convenience that it then breaks apart with great regularity and speed. This is where our enzyme friend the breakup artist comes into the picture. Certain products that are formed can be toxic to the body if they exceed a certain concentration, such as hydrogen peroxide, which as we said previous, causes gray hair.

In this situation the enzymes Catalase and Glutathione Peroxidase enter the picture and break apart hydrogen peroxide to form water and oxygen.

If you want to keep premature graying away for a few more decades, then get ready to meet your new best enzyme friends: SOD, Catalase and Glutathione Peroxidase. These helpful little enzymes enjoy turning free radicals into hydrogen peroxide and that into nothing more than water and oxygen – and they’re good at it too. In fact, scientists have shown that one catalase molecule can convert over 40 million hydrogen peroxide molecules in just one second.

For those of us who want to keep grey hair at bay – in addition to a wide assortment of diseases and ailments – enzyme therapy can help keep our bodies healthy and strong. Many ailments are the direct result of enzyme, vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Several case studies support the effectiveness of enzyme therapy; from constant fatigue to nighttime seizures, enzyme therapy has provided a comprehensive solution for many individuals who were failed by prescription medications and now with the advent of gray hair pills, it’s being used as a treatment to reverse gray hair.

From stopping grey hair formation to sustaining high energy levels, enzyme therapy is a scientific breakthrough that shouldn’t be ignored. So when your girlfriend starts to complain about finding a grey hair, tell her that there may be a gray hair pill that can do her body and grey hair good.
