Yes, Grey Defence® works. Grey Defence® contains several essential amino acids, vitamins and enzymes that together form a catalytic force for the metabolic breakdown of hydrogen peroxide found at the base of hair follicles. During aging the build up of hydrogen peroxide is what causes grey hair.

Free radicals called superoxides are formed during respiration and are quickly neutralized to form hydrogen peroxide. Superoxides and hydrogen peroxide form a class of compounds call reactive oxygen species (ROS); they are highly reactive and damaging to cells in our bodies. Hydrogen peroxide is quickly converted to water and oxygen by the antioxidant enzymes Catalase and Glutathione Peroxidase.

As we grow older our bodies’ produces less of these antioxidant enzymes. This reduction leads to escaped hydrogen peroxide molecules which then accumulate at the base of the hair follicle. Once a critical concentration of hydrogen peroxide is reached it starts bleaching the hair as it grows causing what we refer to as Stage I ROS greying.

Eventually Stage I ROS greying leads to Stage II ROS greying. In Stage II ROS greying hydrogen peroxide engages in chemical reactions that cause molecular damage to hair follicular melanocyte stem cells (FMSC) – these cells produce hair color. This damage leads to FMSC aging (senescence) and/or FMSC death (apoptosis).

Grey Defence®XTREME is formulated to neutralize hydrogen peroxide to stop and reverse Stage I ROS greying. Grey Defence®XTREME WILL NOT work for to Stage II ROS greying (genetic greying) or greying due to illness such as a thyroid condition.

Assuming normal melanogenesis, in the absence of hydrogen peroxide, the hair should return to its natural pigmentation during the next anagen growth cycle.

Unfortunately no. Grey Defence®XTREME does not work for everyone since it targets only greying due to hydrogen peroxide bleaching and vitamin deficiency. Hydrogen peroxide is not produced as a reaction to infection, but rather as a result of “respiratory burst” where the enzyme NADPH oxidase produces large quantities of superoxides (free radicals) as a by-product of normal metabolic activities.

Left un-neutralized, free radicals will damage cells and reduce their lifespan. The body produces Superoxide dismutase another enzyme whose sole purpose is the dismutation of superoxides into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. In short, each breath leads to the eventual production of hydrogen peroxide, regardless of whether we have an infection or not.

To fight site specific infections an enzyme called Myeloperoxidase converts a small amount of the large quantity of hydrogen peroxide produced with every breath to hypochlorous acid, it is this acid that is used to fight SITE SPECIFIC bacterial infection and there is no shortage of hydrogen peroxide production for whenever this conversion is required.

In addition several studies have shown that hydrogen peroxide deactivates the enzymes Methionine Sulfoxide Reductases A and B (MSRA, MSRB), whose metabolic function is the repair of oxidative damage to proteins to restore biological activity.

Further, the body produces two enzymes to control hydrogen peroxide accumulation (Catalase & Glutathione Peroxidase) as we get older the production of systemic antioxidant enzyme are reduce due to the body’s rationing system – this is essentially what aging is. Grey Defence® simply augments this reduced production while employing additional measures to control the accumulation of hydrogen peroxide.

For many types of oral medications that are not susceptible to stomach acid (e.g. multivitamins), there’s no need for acid protection (enteric coating). However, if any of the key ingredients in a formulation is known to be susceptible to stomach acid, then enteric coating is recommended. On the other hand, if any of the key ingredients are HIGHLY susceptible to stomach acid, such as enzymes – enzymes are proteins and stomach acid is very efficient at breaking down proteins – then without proper stomach acid protection the enzymes are quickly destroyed and broken down to amino acids.

Eating food to block the effects of stomach acid digestion on unprotected pills is a losing proposition since these foods will be broken down as well – after all, breaking down food is why we have stomachs in the first place. Additionally, the more stuff we have in our stomach, the longer the digestive process takes – it can take up to 4 hours to clear your stomach after a meal (the above linked video shows what happens to unprotected pills after just 1 hour).

Beside the fact that eating solid food prolongs the time it takes for your stomach to clear, eating a meal ends up reducing bioavailability of your grey hair pill. This is because these pills contain enzymes – which are macro-molecules – that ends up competing with the macro-molecules from your digested meal for space on the limited number of absorption transports vessels found in your small intestines.
